Communications

KAOS has a significant online presence, making use of various mailing lists, LiveJournal Communities and IRC. Opinions expressed by KAOS agents and affiliates may not represent the official viewpoint of the club(s), and may very well be howlingly stupid; this is the internet we're talking about.

Mailing Lists

KAOS has two types of mailing list, lists devoted to various KAOS activities, and lists devoted to specific KAOS branches.

This is a list of public KAOS mailing lists. If you know of any others, you'll already know how to access them. Some of these lists can be also be viewed here. There may even be a list we've forgotton to put on these pages. Others are hosted elsewhere, don't use the Mailman mailing list software, don't appear for technical reasons or are classified.

Where the list-name is a link, you can click on it to join. Isn't modern technology wonderful.

Most of these lists, except for the discussion list use Mailman commands to subscribe/unsubscribe and so on, so if you don't usually have web access, you can subscribe by sending a message with the word 'subscribe' in the body to the address you get by adding '-requests' to the list name (eg kea-requests@kaos.org.nz). You can get more information by sending mail to the request address with the word 'help' in it.

Try not to be a tosser.

Activities Lists

The Party List

This is the announcement list for any social events related to KAOS and its numerous satellite states. Social events include parties1, drinkies2, gaming conventions and UCMRS feasts. The list is moderated by a circle of Secret Masters who strive to ensure that only the purest party announcements reach the list (ie, no sneaky postings of parties at other people's houses...)

You need to be a member of the Partylist to post to it. To send an announcement to the list, use this handy form.

The Killing Rounds List

If you want to hear about the latest killing round, talk about the last round, organise a round or just toss ideas around, you'll want this list.

The KAOS Expeditionary Army List

If you want to be involved in Pacifist Warfare or various other 'expeditionary' (i.e group) activities, this is the list to be on.

The Stunts List

KAOS has a fine tradition of confusing the general public for our own amusement. If you've got what it takes to carry on this noble cause (a certain lack of shame helps) then you might want to join this list.

The Secret Masters

There is no Cthulhu Cult. You can't join this mailing list because it doesn't exist

Branch Lists

The Canterbury List

Canterbury has one list for discussion and notices.

Otago Lists

Otago has two lists, the KAOS Otago Discussion List and the KAOS Otago Notices List. If you just want the notices and not the chit-chat, you can just join the notices list; or if you want everything you can just join the discussion list, as all mail from the notices list is forwarded there as well.

Auckland Lists

Like Otago, Auckland has two lists; a discussion list and a notices list. However it's worth noting that the discussion list is a Yahoo group (not a Mailman list), and notices are not automatically posted to it, so you may wish to join both. Note also that if you may need to turn on Javascript temporarily (or temporarily enable it globally if you're using a plugin like NoScript) to successfully complete registration with Yahoo.

Massey and VUW Lists

Massey and VUW each have a single mailing list for both notices and general chatter

The Fifth List

The Fifth List is the mailing list for the KAOS Fifth Regiment; the National (and in some cases International) KAOS Branch for veterans of the university branches (and others who've left it until late in life to actually join KAOS).

LiveJournal Communities

Many many KAOS agents are members of the KAOSians community, and quite a few post links ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous in KAOS Memepool.

Other KAOS communities include:

  • Drunk KAOS Party (you may not remember later why you posted that here, or why it was funny).
  • KAOS Food (some KAOS agents can actually cook).
  • KAOS Parents (yes, KAOS really has been around a few years now).

There is no Cthulhu Cults community.

IRC

Here is a link to the KAOS IRC Channel (#KAOS). Knock yourself out.

1. Obviously. A party of course is a drinkies with loud music and dancing.
